What is the New CDL Law?

new CDL law from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)

The new CDL law from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA [1]) “established new minimum training standards for certain individuals applying for a Class A or Class B commercial driver’s license.” The new CDL requirements include drivers getting their Class A or Class B CDL for the first time, upgrading their CDL, or adding an endorsement for the first time.

The new CDL law was to take effect February 7, 2020, but will now be implemented February 7, 2022. The FMCSA will use the additional time [2] to complete development of the Training Provider Registry (TPR), the electronic interface component of the new law that allows training-providers to self-certify and communicate with the State Driver Licensing Agencies (SDLAs).

The new CDL law [3] is formally referred to as “Minimum Training Requirements for Entry-Level Commercial Motor Vehicle Operators” and the requirements referred to as “entry-level driver training (ELDT) requirements.”
