HVAC R technicians service heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and refrigeration (HVAC R) systems, which control the temperature and air quality of buildings. Some HVAC techs also specialize in certain categories, such as solar technology, radiant heating, or commercial refrigeration.

The duties of an HVAC technician depend on industry, position, and specialty. Yet, most HVAC technicians will perform a variety of tasks that cover technical, administrative, and customer-service-related areas of the job. 

This can include installing, cleaning, and maintaining HVAC R systems, installing electrical components and wiring, repairing or replacing defective equipment, components, or wiring, and more.

The BLS reports that the median annual wage for HVAC/R technicians (as of May 2023) was $57,300. Additionally, the highest 10% earned more than $84,250.

HVAC/R technicians typically have a variety of different work environments, which means there’s typically a lot of job variety from day-to-day. The BLS reports that HVAC/R technicians primarily work in homes, schools, stores, hospitals, office buildings, or factory settings.

The BLS forecasts the HVAC job outlook will grow by 9% from 2023 to 2033.
