QUICK FACTS: CDL TRAINING PROGRAM

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that CDL truck drivers, and most tractor-trailer drivers, are long-haul drivers who operate vehicles that weigh in at more than 26,000 lbs. Depending on their employers and positions, some truck drivers can drive national routes, allowing for plenty of travel as they work.

The CDL Training Course at Delta Technical College in Mississippi is 20 days.

For heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, the median annual wage was $54,320 in May 2023, according to BLS. After completing CDL training, professional drivers are typically paid by the mile and work full-time with the potential to earn bonuses.

Many truck drivers find employment in truck transportation, wholesale trade, manufacturing, and construction, and some are self-employed. Truck drivers spend most of their time on the road, which can be a major lifestyle adjustment.

Most drivers’ routes are assigned by their dispatchers, but some drivers plan their own routes. Depending on their jobs, drivers can take long routes throughout the country that require them to be away from home for days at a time or drivers can select local routes, which may require them to drive two shipments in a day.

The BLS predicts about 240,300 openings for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers are projected each year, on average, over the decade (2023-2033). As the economy depends on truck transportation, the demand for drivers will increase. Currently, trucks transport most of the freight in the United States, so drivers are in demand as much as all other occupations.

The total cost of the CDL Training Course is $3,500.
