The School of Medical Assisting at Delta Technical College
The Medical Assisting Program teaches you the skills you need to play a supporting role in the healthcare industry as a medical assistant! Common medical assistant duties include assisting with EKGs and x-rays, preparing the patient for physical exams, assisting the physician with minor surgical procedures, and sterilizing instruments. In some work settings, the medical assistant is expected to effectively handle administrative office procedures such as billing, coding, scheduling, insurance claims, and electronic record keeping.
The Medical Assisting Program at Delta Tech (DTC) is taught by instructors with real-world experience in the medical field. Medical assistant classes at DTC include a combination of hands-on lab instruction and classroom training. The Medical Assisting Program concludes with an externship that gives you in-the-field experience in a medical facility such as physician’s office, chiropractor’s office, or podiatrist’s office or clinic.

The instructors at DTC’s medical assistant trade school bring real-world experience to the classroom and lab. Through hands-on instruction, you’ll be trained in both clinical & administrative duties, including:
- Assisting with physical exams, EKGs, X-ray procedures & first aid
- Performing routine lab tests
- Administering medications (as directed by a physician)
- Understanding Integrated Electronic Health Records, HIPAA compliance & insurance coding
Medical Assistant Certification
For medical assistant certification, DTC prepares students to take the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) National Medical Assistant (NCMA) Certification Exam.

Medical Assisting Careers
At DTC’s school for medical assistants, you’ll gain the foundational skills you need to start an entry-level career in this growing field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates employment of medical assistants to grow 15% from 2023 to 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations (4%). They project about 119,800 openings for medical assistants each year over the decade.

The responsibilities of a medical assistant are influenced by their speciality and work setting. Administrative duties might include answering phones, greeting patients, managing patient medical records, managing appointment scheduling, and making arrangements for hospital admissions and laboratory services. Clinical responsibilities generally include recording medical history, taking vitals, addressing treatment procedures to patients, and preparing them for exams. DTC’s medical assistant classes provide hands-on experience in these areas to prepare you for entry-level career opportunities.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT SALARY?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median annual wage for medical assistants was $42,000 as of May 2023. While BLS data indicates that salaries are higher for medical assistants working in outpatient care centers or hospitals, annual wages are dependent upon several factors including location and patient populations.
